Creatures: Things with Wings, Teeth, and Too Many Legs

Have you ever had an unexpected encounter with an animal? In this episode, Misha and Larissa share some of their funniest, strangest, and most unforgettable animal stories. From a bat loose in a house and a mouse hiding in a waterbed to bears, moose, geese, and a very unwelcome surprise in a skirt while traveling in India, this conversation is full of laughs, suspense, and memorable wildlife encounters.

In this episode of the Extra English Podcast, Misha and Larissa swap stories about their most memorable encounters with animals and other creatures.

The conversation begins with Misha's tale of a bat that somehow got into her house. While her brave roommate chased the bat and tried to trap it, Misha admits she spent most of the adventure hiding under a table in terror. This leads to a discussion about why bats seem so creepy and whether they deserve their bad reputation.

Larissa then shares the story of discovering a mouse sleeping in the warm blankets of her waterbed when she was a teenager. The experience left her so shaken that she refused to sleep in her basement bedroom for days. The two compare mice and rats and debate whether either can ever really be considered cute.

The stories become even more dramatic when Misha recounts a backpacking trip in India during which she discovered a huge centipede hiding inside her skirt after it had apparently traveled with her for hours. She describes the panic that followed and how the experience made her inspect every piece of clothing for months afterward.

The conversation then moves to larger wildlife. Larissa remembers seeing a bear wander through her backyard when she was a child in northern Ontario, while Misha talks about spotting bears and moose during camping trips. They discuss how animals behave when protecting their young and why humans sometimes forget that we are visitors in the animals' territory.

Along the way, they compare Canada's wildlife to animals found elsewhere in the world and agree that one of Canada's most intimidating creatures isn't a bear at all—it's the famously aggressive Canada goose.

Filled with humor, storytelling, and natural conversation, this episode explores the surprising, scary, and sometimes hilarious ways that animals cross paths with humans.
